A new hub for hands-on learning and workforce development is now open in North Houston. San Jacinto College, in partnership with Pfluger Architects, has unveiled its new Center for Biotechnology at the Generation Park campus—an immersive, purpose-built facility designed to prepare students for careers in one of the region’s fastest-growing industries.
Spanning 10,000 square feet, the Center for Biotechnology delivers experiential learning environments that mirror real-world biomanufacturing settings. Students gain access to advanced equipment, industry-standard protocols, and specialized lab spaces that reflect the rigor of professional biotech facilities. The center supports associate degrees, certificates, and short-term credentials, offering flexible pathways for both new students and working professionals seeking to reskill.
San Jacinto College is the exclusive provider of National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training–licensed training in the southern United States and the only such provider in Texas. The college also offers the region’s first and only associate’s degree in biomanufacturing technology, positioning it at the forefront of workforce development for life sciences and biotech manufacturing.
The aggressive design and construction schedule required close collaboration among multiple partners. Page led the design of the building envelope and site, creating a pedestrian-friendly experience that connects the facility to nearby trails and campus amenities.
Tellepsen Builders served as general contractor, while Pfluger Architects designed the interior environments and MEP systems, ensuring the labs met stringent performance and adaptability requirements.
Flexibility was a guiding principle throughout the design. Pfluger created modular lab spaces using a partition-based layout that allows the facility to evolve alongside curriculum and industry needs. The center functions as a laboratory suite anchored by an entry lobby with lockers, break areas and support spaces.
Students pass through a control gowning room—replicating real cleanroom entry procedures—before entering specialized labs for Upstream and Cell Processing, Downstream operations, Fill and Finish and Clean Room Qualifications.
“This facility gives students hands-on experience in cleanroom environments that mirror the real-world settings of biotech labs,” says Raleigh Sullivan, AIA, Managing Principal of Pfluger’s Houston office. “Every space was designed to reflect the rigor of the environments where graduates will work, while also allowing for future flexibility.”
The program also plays a critical role in Houston’s expanding life sciences ecosystem. With proximity to the Texas Medical Center and growing global investment in biotech innovation, demand for skilled biomanufacturing professionals continues to rise.
“San Jacinto College recognized the growing demand for skilled professionals in the biotech field,” says Chris Laack, Higher Education Practice Leader at Pfluger Architects. “This center ensures homegrown talent is ready to meet industry demand and support the region’s continued growth.”
