Skanska Tops Out UVA’s Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology

Skanska has announced the topping out of the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Virginia (UVA), marking a major milestone in the construction of one of the region’s most advanced research facilities.

The $350 million, 355,809-square-foot institute will anchor UVA’s Fontaine Research Park, featuring five stories of modern, flexible laboratory and research space. Designed to accelerate breakthroughs in cellular and gene therapy, nanotechnology, and targeted drug delivery, the facility will also include a café and conference center to foster collaboration among researchers.

“This world-class biotechnology facility is an investment in life sciences innovation and capabilities that will shape the future of research and discovery throughout the Commonwealth and beyond,” says Mark Balling, Executive VP of Skanska USA Building’s Mid-Atlantic region.

To date, the project has required 3,739 tons of structural steel and over 160,000 worker hours. Once complete, it will generate hundreds of jobs and attract biotech and pharmaceutical companies to Charlottesville, strengthening Virginia’s position as a leader in life sciences.

Construction began in December 2023 and is slated for completion in late 2027.
