$1,500 Rent in Atlanta Gets Less Than 800 Sq. Ft.

The highly anticipated report How Much Apartment Space You Can Get for $1,500 in 200 U.S. Cities is out. It is a helpful yearly guide for renters looking to maximize their rent budget.

Renters can get the most space with their $1,500 rent budget in the South, yet Atlanta ranks in the bottom 20 when it comes to legroom, offering 800 sq. ft. That’s double the space they’d get in Washington, D.C., but 500 sq. ft. less than in Georgia’s very own Columbus and Macon.

Here are the details:

  • Atlanta may offer more space than the nation’s capital, but it lags other mid-size cites in the region. For example, $1,500 gets you a generous 1,247 sq. ft. in Oklahoma City; 1,137 sq. ft. in El Paso, TX; and 1,071 sq. ft. in in Louisville, KY.
  • Zooming in, Columbus and Macon rank second and third nationwide for the most apartment space for $1,500 — a whopping 1,332 and 1,330 sq. ft., respectively. Smaller cities appear to be offering more space; Savannah doesn’t follow this trend. Here, $1,500 is enough for 833 sq. ft.
  • Nationwide, $1,500 rents an average of 715 sq. ft. However, 11 Southern cities offer less than that, including major Florida hubs like Tampa (712 sq. ft.) and Miami (506 sq. ft.), as well as places in Virginia like Alexandria (582 sq. ft.) and Arlington (476 sq. ft.)Check out the interactive U.S. map of the 200 cities analyzed for an easy comparison across the nation in our full report here:
