Survey Says: Construction Is One of the Toughest Jobs in America—So Why Aren’t Workers Getting the Credit (or Safety) They Deserve?

A new survey commissioned by Bosch Power Tools and conducted by Talker Research has confirmed what many in the trades already know: construction work is tough. In fact, it ranked as the second toughest job in the country, right behind firefighting.

But while the public seems to understand how demanding the work is, the survey also uncovered some serious concerns from trade professionals about jobsite safety and lack of appreciation.

According to the data:

  • 57% of trade workers experienced up to four safety-related “close calls” on the job in the past year.
  • 81% said trade workers don’t get the credit they deserve for the work they do.
  • And 42% feel like their employer is skirting safety codes and regulations.

With numbers like these, it’s clear that ensuring proper use of power tools and building a stronger culture of safety on jobsites is more important than ever.

The survey also included a ranking of the Top 20 Toughest Jobs in America, based on responses from both the general public and trade professionals:

  1. Firefighter (48%)
  2. Construction worker (44%)
  3. Military (38%)
  4. Doctor (38%)
  5. Police officer (37%)
  6. EMT or paramedic (35%)
  7. Astronaut (32%)
  8. Farmer (29%)
  9. Air traffic controller (29%)
  10. Oil worker (25%)
  11. Nurse (18%)
  12. Roofer (16%)
  13. Electrician (16%)
  14. Home builder (16%)
  15. Engineer (15%)
  16. Pilot (14%)
  17. Teacher (14%)
  18. Lawyer (13%)
  19. Carpenter, woodworker or cabinet maker (12%)
  20. Drywall/plaster installer (12%)

The survey was conducted online between April 8 and April 17, 2025, with responses from 1,000 members of the general population and 1,000 American trade workers.
