Skanska has reached substantial completion on the new 40,300-square-foot Belmont Skating Rink and Athletic Facility in Belmont MA. The project replaces the former Viglirolo Skating Rink and marks a major investment in year-round community recreation and sustainable design.

“Skanska’s team provided construction expertise in a professional manner to navigate the twists and turns that come up during this type of project and were able to align their trade partners to focus on the Town’s vision and goals,” says Mark Haley, Chair of the Building Committee.

“The Viglirolo Skating Rink had long been a focal point of the local Belmont hockey community and we’re honored to have played a role in the revitalization of the space through the construction of the new Belmont Skip Viglirolo Rink,” says Bryan Northrop, EVP and GM for Skanska USA Building’s New England Region. “Skanska is proud to have delivered a modern sustainable facility that will serve future generations of Belmont athletes and residents.”

The Galante Architecture Studio led the design vision with a focus on long-term environmental performance. “We were proud to design a state-of-the-art fossil fuel free CO2-driven ice plant and cover most of the building with solar panels,” says Design Principal Ted Galante. “Our goal is to deliver the most sustainable buildings for the long haul and the Town of Belmont has the foresight to inspire this to happen.”

The steel-framed 40,300-square-foot facility features a 200-by-85-foot ice sheet, four high school team locker rooms, four dressing rooms, public toilets, bleacher seating and a concession stand. The fossil-free building includes PV solar panels, a heat pump refrigeration system and energy recovery systems to maximize efficiency.

The project expands on Skanska’s athletic facility experience in the region including Deerfield Academy’s athletic complex, Boston College’s Margot Connell Recreation Center and scoreboard and audiovisual upgrades at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena.

Skanska worked closely with the Town of Belmont to deliver the project safely and on schedule during the 18-month construction period which began in October 2023.
