San Jacinto College, in partnership with Pfluger Architects, has opened its new Center for Biotechnology at the North Houston Generation Park campus—an innovative 10,000-square-foot facility creating career pathways for skilled professionals in one of the fastest-growing industries.
The center provides experiential learning with access to cutting-edge resources and immersive training environments designed to prepare students for specialized, high-demand careers.
As the exclusive provider of the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) for the southern U.S., San Jacinto College is leading the way with the region’s first and only associate degree in biomanufacturing technology—a two-year technical program built to prepare students for this rapidly expanding field. The Center also offers certificates and shorter credentials for post-graduates and professionals seeking to meet workforce needs.
The aggressive design and construction schedule required tight coordination among project partners. Page designed the building envelope and site, which includes a pedestrian-friendly experience connecting to nearby trails and campus amenities. General contractor Tellepsen Builders managed construction while Pfluger Architects designed the building interiors and MEP systems.
Pfluger created a flexible and adaptable lab module layout to support the college’s evolving curriculum and operational needs. The design features a laboratory suite with an entry lobby, lockers, breakroom and workroom for students and staff.
Students enter through a control gowning room to simulate real-world cleanroom protocols before moving into specialized labs for Upstream and Cell Processing, Downstream, Fill and Finish, and Clean Room Qualifications—each mirroring actual biomanufacturing environments.
“This facility gives students hands-on experience in cleanroom environments that mirror the real-world settings of biotech labs,” says Raleigh Sullivan, AIA, Managing Principal of Pfluger’s Houston office. “Every space was designed to reflect the rigor of the environments where graduates will work, while also allowing for future flexibility. To contribute, even in a small way, to the life-changing research and education that will unfold here feels like an honor.”
Through its partnership with NIBRT in Dublin, Ireland, San Jacinto College joins an international alliance of leading biopharma training institutions addressing the global shortage of skilled professionals. One of only two programs of its kind in the U.S., the Center plays a vital role in Houston’s growing life sciences ecosystem, attracting global companies eager to advance biotechnology innovation.
“Houston’s biotech ecosystem is a launchpad for startups and innovation,” says Chris Laack, Higher Education Practice Leader at Pfluger Architects. “San Jacinto College recognized the growing demand for skilled professionals, and this new center ensures our homegrown talent is meeting industry needs.”
