Skanska has completed Virginia State University’s Alfred W. Harris Academic Commons—a 175,000-square-foot facility that unites the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Education under one roof. The new building now stands as a central hub for student activity and academic collaboration.
“This project is an investment for the next generation of scholars,” says Mark Balling, EVP responsible for Skanska’s Mid-Atlantic building operations. “We are honored to have partnered with VSU on this project, a school rich in history, to bring their vision to life in a way that reflects the institution’s roots and highlights their standing as an academic leader.”
Designed to foster community and interdisciplinary learning, the Academic Commons features media and broadcast laboratories, classrooms, ceramic labs, art studios, and a black box theatre with a scene shop.
Beyond academics, the facility integrates wellness and recreation amenities, including an elevated running track, six basketball courts, and a natatorium with a six-lane, 25-yard pool and three-meter diving boards.
Now the largest building ever constructed on the VSU campus, the Alfred W. Harris Academic Commons marks a milestone in the university’s evolution. The project underscores Skanska’s ongoing commitment to helping institutions and communities build spaces that inspire growth and connection for generations to come.
