Swinerton Completes Renovations at Spelman, Agnes Scott Colleges

Swinerton Builders has wrapped up $1.5 million in renovation projects at two of metropolitan Atlanta’s oldest and most storied educational institutions: Spelman College and Agnes Scott College. The upgrades create new specialized spaces designed to advance student learning and campus experiences.

“Education projects are some of our favorite jobs, as we take pride in building spaces that educate and inspire the leaders of tomorrow,” says Derek Mosiman, VP and Division Manager, Swinerton Atlanta. “From kindergarten to advanced learning classrooms, creating environments that enhance the lives of those within our communities is an important responsibility that we embrace wholeheartedly with passion, drive and incredibly high standards.”

Agnes Scott College

At Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, Swinerton transformed underutilized administrative space into a professional-grade production facility and two classrooms totaling 1,700 square feet. The new studio is equipped for video and podcast production, with advanced acoustical treatments, flexible power access and a dedicated viewing room.

Swinerton’s self-perform team handled demolition, drywall, metal framing, ceilings, doors, flooring, painting and finishes to create the new environments. Designed by Pieper O’Brien Herr Architects, the studio and classroom are located in the Dana Building, with an additional classroom in the Buttrick Building.

Spelman College

At Spelman College, Swinerton delivered a new 1,100-square-foot student and faculty café inside the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & The Arts. The café supports the $86 million center’s arts, STEM and Innovation Lab programs.

The contractor oversaw mechanical and plumbing modifications to support commercial-grade kitchen equipment, along with new millwork, lighting, drywall, and acoustical enhancements. The café was designed by SCOPOS Hospitality Group in partnership with Interior Architects and opened this summer.

Building Momentum in Atlanta

Beyond Spelman and Agnes Scott, Swinerton is also leading infrastructure and renovation projects at Cobb County’s Harrison High School and Russell Elementary School. Since expanding to the Southeast in 2018, the firm’s Atlanta division has delivered nearly $600 million in projects across aviation, corporate interiors, healthcare, hospitality, education, civic and housing sectors.
