Skanska, a leading global development and construction firm, announces it has been selected by Durham Tech Community College to build a state-of-the-art life sciences building, the Novo Nordisk Life Sciences Center. The firm recently broke ground on the project which includes the demolition of the existing building. The new single-story 30,700-square-foot Novo Nordisk Life Sciences Center will house 12 flexible, ballroom-style open lab modules, additional classroom space, and various break rooms. The building will also feature study areas for the College’s BioWork and Biotechnology programs, as well as employee training space for life sciences companies.
“The life sciences sector continues to thrive across the Triangle Region, and we are honored to collaborate with Durham Tech Community College on the development of a facility that will enhance the academic environment for students. This space is designed to support their preparation for careers in a dynamic industry that is increasingly vital to the growth and resilience of our local economy,” said Mark Balling, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Skanska’s Mid-Atlantic region.
According to Durham County Economic Development, over 500 life science companies are based in the Triangle region. The new building will position the College to continue training the next generation of life sciences professionals who will join the workforce, prepared to succeed in the burgeoning sector for years to come.”We were thrilled to break ground on the Novo Nordisk Life Sciences Center with Skanska and our other partners,” said Durham Tech President J.B. To date, Skanska has constructed 129 specialty/life science spaces to support higher education and healthcare partners who remain at the forefront of research and development.
The construction on the life sciences building began in August 2025 and is expected to be completed in March 2027.
