From Snellville to the sea: A sailor’s path to a Navy warship

SAN DIEGO – Petty Officer 3rd Class Tirrell Billups, a native of Snellville, Georgia, serves aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex, currently operating out of San Diego, California. Billups graduated from Shiloh High School in 2022.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Snellville.

“I learned early on how to communicate with different people because in the Navy you always meet people from different places with different thoughts and values,” Billups said. “I had to move around a lot growing up, and I was always meeting new people, and my parents taught me to treat everyone with respect.”

The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.

According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.”
